New Little League Baseball Bat Standards

Happy Spring!

Before you buy a new baseball bat, Little League is changing the rules for approved baseball bats.  There is a lot of information at the Little League web site explaining the changes, which can be found at http://www.littleleague.org/learn/equipment/baseballbatinfo.htm .

The key takeaways include the following:

  • Little League-approved baseball bats that were approved for use for the 2017 season will no longer be acceptable for use in any Little League game or activity starting on January 1, 2018. As of the first day of 2018, the new USA Baseball Bat Standard will be implemented.
  • The USA Bat standard will create more of a wood-like performance in youth bats, while still allowing younger players to use light weight bats that could not be achieved with wood bats.
  • For more information on the USA Bat standard and a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.

What does this mean for players in the LBA:

  • ALL players in our In-Town program from their first season with assisted pitch through their Majors season (12U) will need to use a bat with a USABat stamp and a 2 and 5/8” barrel maximum.
  • ALL players in our In-Town program for 13U and older (Juniors, Seniors, PONY leagues) will also need to use a bat with a USABat stamp and a 2 and 5/8” barrel maximum.
  • The USA Bat standard may not apply for Travel games.  Some leagues are making this switch, others are not.  So it will depend on the specific rules of the tournament or league the travel team plays in.

Again, this is a national change being implemented.  Please see the web-sites we referenced above for your detailed questions.
